This week, I have seen a brilliant and simple idea, that I would like to share, called “employagility”(Dengler, 2020). The video by Mrs. Dengler was an incredible TED x Talk where she helped illuminate the potential for longevity of our working life. Historically the longer you are in a company the more that you are expected to know about all of the inner workings of that company making you very valuable. This is not always the case because of the way our country industrializes every process in order to maximize profits, even at the expense of quality. This has moved many companies to look for the cheapest way to produce their products and that has led to mass importation of low cost, low quality goods. It has also caused many companies to force their employees to specialize in only one aspect of the production, marketing, sales, customer service, supply chain management, financial management, ect. Becouse these men, and women are spending 30 years looking at only one aspect of the process they are not able to pivot when the company decides to move them to another area, so it is more cost effective to fire them, and hire someone new to go in that direction. The old ways of the Master Craftsman are almost completely gone. This is why Mrs. Denglers, concept of making ourselves better through constant adaptation to an ever-changing environment by changing the way we see the world will change making us very employable at any age (Dengler, 2020).
Thank you,
